Guatemala 2024

Guatemala challenged me in ways I didn't expect. I learned to communicate across language barriers, work with limited resources, and adapt when things rarely went according to plan. Days were long, often beginning before sunrise with Spanish lessons or hospital work and ending with homework, gym sessions, or conversations with my host family. Working in the hospitals was the most meaningful part of the experience. Repairing medical equipment that would immediately return to patient care made even small successes feel significant. It also gave me a new appreciation for creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in low-resource healthcare settings. Outside of work, I experienced incredible landscapes, from volcanoes and crater lakes to rainforests and black-sand beaches. Hiking Acatenango and watching Volcán Fuego erupt before sunrise is an experience I will never forget. At the same time, I struggled with homesickness, illness, cultural differences, and the frustration of unpredictable schedules. The people made the experience unforgettable. I formed close friendships, learned from my host family, practiced Spanish every day, and discovered that honest communication could solve many of the challenges that arose. I also found comfort in small routines—a good cup of coffee, running, baking, or simply spending quiet time with friends. Looking back, Guatemala was much more than a volunteer project. It was a lesson in resilience, adaptability, gratitude, and perspective. It pushed me outside my comfort zone and reminded me how much personal growth can come from embracing uncertainty.
